This Week in Career Advice: Interview Questions You Shouldn’t Answer

It’s not uncommon for interviewers to cross a line when asking questions. However, did you know some of these inappropriate questions are often illegal?

Generally speaking, the following topics should never come up in a job interview:

  • Age
  • Marital status or family
  • National origin
  • Race
  • Ethnicity
  • Gender
  • Sexual orientation
  • Religion
  • Disability

So what can you do when you’re asked an illegal question in an interview? Quite simply, you can tell your employer that you’re uncomfortable answering the question but would be happy to share more relevant information or experience. If you’re really uncomfortable, you can pursue legal action through your local Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) office.
