Economy Adds 130,000 Jobs in August, 2019

Leading Insurance Career Site, InsuranceJobs.com Shares Employment Trends from the BLS’ Economic Situation Report

The US economy added 130,000 jobs in August, according to preliminary numbers reported in the US Bureau of Labor Statistic’s Economic Situation report released earlier this month.

So far this year, job growth has averaged 158,000 jobs per month, below the average monthly gain of 223,000 in 2018. The unemployment rate was 3.7 percent for the third straight month while the number of unemployed persons was essentially unchanged at 6.0 million.

Last month’s job growth was due in large part to the hiring of 25,000 tempory workers for the upcoming 2020 Census. Private sector employment increased by 96,000 jobs with gains in health care and financial activities.

Employment numbers were revised down from 193,000 to 178,000 in June and 164,000 to 159,000 in July. Combined, this brought the three-month average down to 156,000 jobs.
