Insurance Industry Adds 5,100 Jobs in April

The insurance industry saw a small increase in employment with the addition of 5,100 jobs for the month of April, according to the latest employment numbers from the U.S Bureau of Labor Statisticsreleased on Friday, May 8, 2015.
The insurance industry grew by 0.20 percent last month and now sits at 2,533,000 employed insurance workers with an unemployment rate of 2.2 percent. Over the past 12 months, the total number of employed insurance workers has increased by 84,900 or 3.26 percent from 2.44 million in April 2014, while the unemployment rate dropped by 2.2 percent from 4.4 percent.
Insurance carriers and related activities made up the bulk of job growth within the finance and insurance sector, which grew by 9,500 jobs last month. Over the last 12 months, the insurance carriers and related activities subsector has contributed 75.8 percent to its parent sector, or 84,900 jobs.
Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 223,000 in April, and the unemployment rate was essentially unchanged at 5.4 percent. Job gains primarily occurred in professional and business services, health care, and construction while employment within mining continued to decline.
After revisions, total nonfarm payroll employment for the month of February and March were revised from 264,000 to 266,000 jobs, and 126,000 to 85,000 jobs, respectively. With these revisions, employment gains in February and March combined were 39,000 lower than previously reported. Over the past 3 months, job gains have averaged 191,000 per month.
