Careers and Employment in Insurance Underwriting 

Insurance underwriters are the primarily link between the insurance company and the insurance agent. Underwriters analyze the risk factors on an application, and as such, must achieve a balance between risky and cautious decisions. If too much risk is allowed, the insurance company will pay out too many claims. If too few applications are approved, insurance companies will not make enough money from premiums. Insurance underwriters typically specialize in one of three main fields: life, health, and property and casualty. Within property and casualty, underwriters may specialize further into commercial or personal insurance. Underwriters can also specialize by type of policy, such as auto insurance, marine insurance, and homeowners’ insurance. The employment of insurance underwriters is projected to decline by 11 percent over a ten year period, from 2014 to 2024. The decline is largely due to the increase in automated software that allows insurance workers to process applications faster than ever before, reducing the need for underwriters.
